John Parisella: The art of bringing people together

Some people remind us, through their career paths and the way they engage with others, of what makes the work of a communications professional and trusted advisor so meaningful. John Parisella is one of those people.

By awarding him an honorary doctorate, McGill University is recognizing John’s remarkable contribution to public life in Quebec, Canada, and North America. At NATIONAL, this honour holds special meaning for us. It celebrates a valued colleague whose dedication inspires us every day.

Communications have changed profoundly over the past several decades. This is especially true today, as platforms continue to multiply, information travels faster than ever, and technology transforms the way we work.

Yet the qualities that define a trusted advisor remain essential: sound judgment, experience, the ability to listen, and an understanding of the people behind the issues. John embodies all of these qualities.

John’s career has taken him from education to the highest levels of political advisory work, from business to diplomacy, and from philanthropy to media commentary. Whether working alongside Quebec premiers or serving in diplomatic roles in New York and Washington, he has helped shape decisions and conversations that have had a lasting impact on our society. Today, his presence in the media continues to help the public better understand increasingly complex issues.

More than 50 years of professional experience have shaped his perspective on current events and inform the insights and advice he shares with our teams and clients.

One common thread runs through his career: bringing people, communities, and institutions closer together. This is one of the most fundamental contributions of communications.

Moving a project forward or informing a decision requires an understanding of different perspectives, a clear explanation of the issues, and the ability to create opportunities for dialogue. Trust is built over time, through strong relationships and a sustained commitment to others. John’s career is a testament to this.

John’s commitment to understanding, learning, and sharing knowledge takes on special significance at McGill University, his alma mater.

The son of an Italian immigrant father and a mother of Irish descent, John grew up in Montreal’s Rosemont neighbourhood, raised by parents who believed education was the key to a better future for their children. His academic journey opened the door to a life dedicated, in many different ways, to serving the community and embracing diversity.

John’s connection to teaching and academic institutions has continued long beyond his student years. In fact, he has often told us that teaching was the most rewarding career of his life.

At a time when public debates are becoming increasingly polarized and cynicism can easily take hold, John’s openness and unwavering belief that positive change is possible are especially valuable.

These qualities remind us of the responsibility we carry as advisors: helping organizations better understand the world around them, build strong relationships, and communicate with clarity and sound judgment.

As NATIONAL celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are proud to have among us someone who so fully embodies these values and aspirations.

John, on behalf of everyone at NATIONAL, congratulations on this well-deserved honour. Thank you for everything you bring to our clients and colleagues, and, above all, for the contributions you continue to make to our society.
