Director, Public Affairs

NATIONAL Public Relations Inc., Canada’s largest public relations consultancy, is seeking an experienced professional specialized in government relations to join our growing practice in our Ottawa office.

The Director should be flawlessly fluent in all aspects of government relations and public affairs, with an understanding of how strategic communications can drive a client’s business goals. They will have a deep knowledge of social platforms – when to use what to achieve a client’s goal – and how to design strategy, execution, monitoring and even training to achieve that goal.

About the role

The successful candidate will have extensive experience and exceptional skills in media relations, such as building and executing successful thought leadership and profile building programs for business leaders, as well as developing and leading earned media strategies for public affairs advocacy campaigns.

With a strong understanding of Canada’s business, financial and political media, the successful candidate is a seasoned professional with client leadership responsibilities, as well as significant staff and administrative duties. They will contribute directly to the management of major accounts, business development, a specialized practice or service area and team management.

Working as a trusted advisor to leading organizations from multiple industry sectors – such as energy, natural resources, manufacturing, transportation, consumer goods, labour and government – the successful candidate will know how to translate current events, political developments and corporate news into strategic opportunities for our clients.

Qualifications

  • Relevant educational background, preferably in political science, public relations, advertising or communications
  • Minimum of 5 years of government relations/public affairs
  • Previous agency experience is desirable
  • Understanding of strategy elements around effective advocacy campaigns
  • Understanding of the federal government and decision-making processes
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling communications content, particularly for a public affairs audience
  • Comfort with digital advocacy approaches and tactics to enhance government relations strategies and awareness campaigns
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for social media and web content
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and deliverables concurrently
  • Highly organized and ability to adhere to budgets and timelines
  • Highly accountable and organized with excellent time management skills

What you will do

As a senior member of the government relations team, you will be expected to:

  • Lead client accounts
  • Work across the NATIONAL network of offices with colleagues in multiple markets as part of NATIONAL’s pan-Canadian public affairs team
  • Maintain key client relationships by providing strategic guidance and counsel
  • Ensure client satisfaction with the Firm, our services, our staff and quickly and effectively resolve problems or concerns
  • Identify and lead new business opportunities
  • Identify opportunities to extend and expand our work with existing clients
  • Demonstrate strong project management skills and ability to deliver mandates on time and on budget
  • Oversee quality control of team assignments including writing, pitching, proposals, reporting and delivery
  • Set achievable goals and tasks, delegate opportunities and provide resources for direct reports to meet their goals; consistently measure and recognize goal achievement
  • Help attract new talent and work to build a team with diverse views and backgrounds
  • Demonstrate an excellent grasp of public policy, politics, current events, business news and the media landscape, and an understanding of how they provide context for client business, as well as for the office
  • Establish strong relationships with the offices throughout the network and collaborate on client business
  • Help raise NATIONAL’s profile in the market for business development
  • Lead project and financial management planning, implementation, and project teams
  • Work with senior leadership to establish achievable revenue growth targets annually
  • Remain abreast of emerging technologies and trends and demonstrates expert understanding of how they integrate into communications programs
  • Seek out and facilitates the engagement of cross-practice, cross-network teams to match client needs with the appropriate capabilities and resources from across the NATIONAL network
  • Mentor, coach, and support team members and ensures staff continue to grow professionally
  • Exemplify NATIONAL’s values of quality, innovation, commitment, respect, collaboration, integrity and responsibility
  • Develop staff to become capable of assuming more senior roles
