A senior medical writer holds increasing responsibility for complex written documents, editorial account management, client relations, communications strategy and editorial team management. He/she handles a wide range of assignments and offers effective counsel to clients on complex issues and problems, as well as contributing to the good functioning of AXON through internal responsibilities.   


  • College or university degree or equivalent
  • Minimum six or seven years in medical communications, editorial or a relevant field
  • Senior-level writing, presentation and strategic/creative skills
  • Superior knowledge/expertise in one or more functional specialties and/or business sectors
  • Strong network of contacts in medical communications or relevant field and growing reputation in medical communications, pharmaceutical industry and/or specialty
  • Superior knowledge/expertise of good publication practice and the principles and practices of medical communications: current events, trends and issues, their impact on the industry, AXON and our clients
  • Ability to work 7.5 hours a day, Monday to Friday, making a total of 37.5 hours per week with core hours of 10.00am to 4.30pm
  • Due to the nature of the industry you are expected to be flexible and may be required to work outside of these hours including, at times, weekends 



Business Development 

  • Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, pursuing leads, writing programmes and proposals, marketing AXON and participating in professional associations
  • Leverage network of contacts to identify and enhance business opportunities
  • Enthusiastically educate clients about AXON’s products and services
  • Market his or her specialised knowledge/expertise/capabilities through appropriate channels
  • Responsibility for large client plans
  • Identify and flag cross-practice business opportunities
  • Present AXON’s credentials at informal and formal meetings unsupported
  • Prepare large-scale, strategic client proposals
  • Contribute to the medical communications team’s business strategy and deliver in line with it
  • Identify business development opportunities, including new capabilities and core offerings to enhance the AXON business model

Consulting Process 

  • Ensure that clients’ needs and expectations are understood and managed
  • Challenge client briefs
  • Establish client service objectives and create a plan to fulfill these objectives
  • Lead formal client meetings and brainstorms unsupported
  • Develop strategies and provide senior-level client counsel
  • Manage large, complex and demanding client mandates on time and on budget
  • Ensure full understanding of the scientific aspects of programmes by self and team members as necessary
  • Consult on important and difficult issues in area of specialisation or field of expertise
  • Research and write sophisticated materials
  • Plan creative events and programmes and supervise their implementation
  • Ensure quality control for finished product delivery across multiple client programmes
  • Manage client crises and issues
  • Develop a good understanding of the role of public relations and be able to discuss importance with client if required  

Team Management 

  • Build client teams, including bringing relevant resources onto team from throughout AXON
  • Distribute and supervise workload among more junior team members
  • Clearly communicate all time and budget guidelines to team members
  • Provide guidance to junior staff within the practice group 


  • Apply commercial strategy to editorial assignments and assist in the development of key messages
  • Research and write complex and sophisticated materials
  • Design, develop and deliver complex clinical presentations with appropriate audience engagement
  • Design and develop medical educational materials using effective adult-learning techniques
  • Review written scientific documents for writing style, strategy, content accuracy and fact/data checking
  • Comprehensive knowledge of journal, publications practices, multiple therapy areas and relevant professional bodies
  • Provide on-site support at client events, such as Advisory Boards and Congresses, by amending slide decks, creating meeting notes and other editorial support as needed 

General and Financial 

  • Contribute to the internal functioning of AXON by leading or playing an active role for various initiatives
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of practice economics and profitability in the management of accounts and mandates
  • Raise awareness about specialised knowledge/expertise/capabilities throughout AXON
  • Complete timesheets accurately on a weekly basis and ensure junior team members to do likewise
  • Assume responsibility for profitability of designated client programmes:
    – Develop, manage, adhere to and reconcile editorial budgets, ensuring senior team members informed of any variations or issues
    – Proactively recost and renegotiate editorial budgets with client when scope of work changes
    – Prepare invoices
    – Timely and accurate recording and approval of time and costs, including suppliers and freelancers
    – Forecast accurately and alert senior team members to relevant variations
    – Accurate capacity planning, in line with budgets, and identify and highlight capacity needs to senior team members
  • Work with senior team members to resource plan across multiple client programmes
  • Negotiate new budgets with clients
  • Set up systems for new clients together with finance team
  • Understand regulatory codes and industry trends, ensuring understanding by other team members and application to medical education programmes
  • Lead collaboration with public relations team and with AXON Communications/NATIONAL Public Relations offices as appropriate 

HR Management 

  • Lead multiple teams
  • Contribute to the development of individuals within his or her team or practice group through direct line management of other editorial team members, maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant HR policies
  • Participate in mentoring system
  • Identify and monitor team issues and suggest solutions to senior team members

  • Provide constructive feedback to team members
  • Build skills and capabilities of others through coaching and guidance and training

  • Work with senior team members to identify and address recruitment needs
